Who Is Atatürk, Father of the Turks? Guide to August 30 Victory Day and Anıtkabir
When you arrive in Türkiye, you’ll undoubtedly notice that charismatic leader’s presence in city squares, historic buildings, flags, and government buildings. With yesterday’s grand celebrations of August 30 Victory Day, let’s take a closer look at Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Türkiye, who holds a special place in the hearts of the Turkish people, and explore his enduring legacy.
🇹🇷 From Thessaloniki to Modern Turkey: A Leader Who Awakened a Nation
Atatürk was born in Selanik (Thessaloniki), then an Ottoman city, and grew up as a distinguished officer and staff officer in the Ottoman Empire. He demonstrated outstanding success on many fronts of the empire, starting with the Battle of Gallipoli.
After the Ottoman Empire reached the point of collapse following occupations after World War I, Mustafa Kemal ignited the fire of independence among the Turkish people, rallied the nation behind him, and launched the National Struggle. With his military genius he led the War of Independence to victory, and then, through the reforms he enacted, he built a modern, secular, and contemporary Republic of Turkey.
In 1934, the surname law granted him by the Turkish Grand National Assembly the title "Atatürk" (Father of the Turks), a symbol of the epic struggle that set the course for this date and of the Turkish people's endless gratitude toward him.
👁️ A Personal Note: Different Perspectives and Social Perception
As you travel around Turkey and meet people, you will see that Atatürk is a great hero and savior for the overwhelming majority of Turkish society. However, when viewed objectively, different criticisms and perspectives also exist in certain segments of society.
Especially due to his radical secular reforms and the abolition of the caliphate, a conservative segment criticizes him for allegedly harming Islam or the traditional Ottoman structure. On the other hand, some groups consider him excessively nationalist due to his policies during the nation-state building process.
Despite all these differing views and social layers, Atatürk remains today the central figure in the country's politics and history as the founder of modern Turkey's institutions, the alphabet reform, women's rights, and the secular legal system.
🎖️ The Meaning of August 30 Victory Day: Against Whom, Where Was It Won?
August 30 is the day when the Great Offensive, which changed the fate of the Turkish nation, was crowned with victory.
Against Whom Was It Won? It was won against the Greek army that had occupied Anatolia and the Allied States supporting them.
Where Did It Take Place? The enemy army was defeated in the Commander-in-Chief Battle fought on the Dumlupınar field within the boundaries of Kütahya, and the Anatolian lands were definitively liberated from occupation.
Each year, this holiday is celebrated with great pride throughout the country on August 30, making it the most special day to understand Turkey's independence and national struggle spirit.
