People form long queues in the scorching summer heat, ignoring the sun beating down on them. You might wonder, "Why are these people waiting in line for that meat in this heat?" You're right, a normal person wouldn't do that. However, when it comes to that freshly cooked, hot, and fragrant cağ kebab, thermodynamic rules no longer apply to Turks. You just have to wait, brother, there's no other way!

Bakırköy: Istanbul's Cosmopolitan Oasis and Cultural Melting Pot

Now that we're in Bakırköy, don't think of it as just a square with meat smells. In my opinion, it's one of Istanbul's most beautiful districts; it's a bit far from the city's chaotic atmosphere, has plenty of transportation options, and boasts an incredibly rich cultural fabric.

For instance, I often hear this from old friends in the neighborhood, our Armenian neighbors: in the 90s and 2000s, our Armenian friends who escaped the crowded and chaotic Kumkapı and Feriköy areas came and settled here. Back then, Kumkapı was a predominantly Armenian district, but over time, the demographic structure changed, and now our friends from Mardin have added color to the area. Istanbul has a layered, colorful history like this.

Cola and Sunflower Seed Culture Clash on the Shore

The Bakırköy shore is a whole different world! Especially on beautiful afternoons, Istanbulites from neighboring districts Güngören and Bahçelievler flock to the shore.

There's a fantastic sociological paradox here: while Bakırköy has a fairly modern face, the adjacent Güngören and Bahçelievler are quite conservative. The people from these two different worlds meet on the shore in the evening and indulge in our national pastime, cola and sunflower seeds. Is it healthy? Not at all! Is it bad for your heart? Absolutely! But the joy of sunflower seed cracking in the sea breeze is priceless.
