Order in the Kitchen and the State: What Is Fraternal Killing?

In European monarchies, the right to the throne passed directly to the eldest son, whereas Ottoman and old Turkish traditions held that sovereignty belonged to all male members of the dynasty. In other words, every prince had an equal right to the throne.

Although this ensured that the strongest prince would ascend the throne, each change of sultan dragged the country into bloody civil wars, leaving the state exposed to fragmentation and foreign intervention.

To protect the state from disintegration and to maintain public order (Nizam-ı Âlem), the imperial administration introduced a very harsh legal measure.

Who Introduced the Law?

As you mentioned in your video, the person who turned this practice into state law was Fatih Sultan Mehmet (II. Mehmed), the conqueror who captured Istanbul and ushered in a new era.

Fatih, in his famous code (Kanunname-i Âl-i Osman), enshrined this rule in law with the following unequivocal wording:

"From my offspring, any of them may be entitled to the sultanate; it is appropriate to kill brothers for the sake of public order. Most scholars have also affirmed this."

From a modern perspective, sacrificing innocent children or young princes may seem unacceptable, yet according to Ottoman state logic, the lives of a few princes could be offered to prevent a civil war that would claim tens of thousands of lives and bring down the empire.

Peak and the End of the Practice

The most dramatic episode of the fraternal killing tradition occurred in 1595. When III. Mehmed ascended the throne, he ordered the execution of his 19 brothers, some of whom were still very young children.

This event caused such deep sorrow and moral wound among the palace and the people that when III. Mehmed’s son I. Ahmed took the throne, he ended this bloody tradition.

He abolished the fraternal killing practice by introducing the "Ekber ve Erşad" system, which designates the oldest and most experienced dynastic member as the successor.
