When you picture Istanbul’s skyline, the first structure that comes to mind is undoubtedly the Galata Tower. For centuries, this massive tower has watched over the city from above; it’s more than just stone — it holds historical intrigues, football legends, daredevils who challenged the sky, and above all, the famous love prophecy passed from mouth to mouth. As a local guide, let’s take a close look at this enchanting tower, both through its historical facts and through the legendary tale I’ve personally experienced and confirmed.

🇮🇹 The Venetians and the Conquest of Istanbul

Although the Galata Tower is today one of the biggest symbols of our culture, it is actually an Italian design. Built by the Venetians in 1348, the tower played a very interesting role in the conquest of Istanbul. While Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror moved his ships overland, the Venetians who dominated the area did not aid Byzantium and kept a secret agreement with the Ottomans. Immediately after the conquest, they handed over the key to the tower without a fight.

⚽ Where Does the Name Galatasaray Come From?

Turkey's famous UEFA cup‑winning team Galatasaray also takes its name directly from this area. This name, formed by the combination of the words "Galata Palace," derives its roots from the historic neighbourhood that hosts the tower and the prestigious high school there. In other words, the spirit that millions chase today was actually born in the shadow of this tower.

🦅 Did Hezarfen Really Fly?

The famous Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi, who lived in the 1st century, launched himself from the very top of this tower with the massive wings he built himself and managed to cross the Bosphorus and descend to Üsküdar.

As a guide I love telling this story to tourists, but let's be honest; flying from Galata to Üsküdar with the technology of that era sounds a bit too "cool". Even if history books write it, it is very likely that the legend has been exaggerated over the centuries. Still, the very courage to leap into the void from that height is, in a word, admirable!

💍 The Famous Love Prophecy and My "Bitter" Experience

Now let’s turn to the tower’s most popular legend: supposedly a woman and a man who climb the Galata Tower together for the first time are destined to marry. As a local guide I now have huge doubts about believing or not believing this legend, because I have personally tested it twice on myself! With my first girlfriend we climbed the tower in great romance and broke up exactly two months later. Saying "maybe there was an energy mismatch the first time," I tried my luck again with the next girlfriend, but the result was again disappointment, another breakup! 😂 So, as your guide, my advice is: instead of climbing the tower with your partner and risking the relationship, walking hand‑in‑hand below and admiring the view from a distance can be a much safer option!
