Although the Galata Tower is one of the greatest symbols of our culture today, it's actually an Italian design. Built by the Genoese in 1348, the tower played a very interesting role in the conquest of Istanbul. While Fatih Sultan Mehmet was having his ships transported overland, the Genoese, who dominated the region, chose not to help the Byzantines and instead made a secret agreement with the Ottomans. Immediately after the conquest, they handed over the keys to the tower without a fight.

Turkey's famous UEFA Cup-winning team Galatasaray also gets its name directly from this region. I went up to the tower with my first girlfriend in a very romantic atmosphere, and exactly two months later, we broke up.
