The Birthplace of Christianity: St. Pierre (St. Peter) Church
🏛️ Historical Significance of St. Pierre Church
It is known that Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, arrived in Antakya in the 30s AD and held his first religious gatherings in this natural cave.
First Catholic Cathedral: Because it was founded by Apostle Peter, the Catholic Church regards it as the first cathedral.
1963 Pilgrimage Designation: In 1963 Pope Paul VI declared it an official \"Pilgrimage Site\" for Christians. A special ceremony is held here each year on June 29.
🎨 Architectural Features and Floor Mosaics
The site, shaped today by a stone façade added during the Crusader period (11th–12th century) to the front of a natural cave, contains captivating details inside:
Floor Mosaics: As you can see in our video, the church floor holds unique mosaics dating from the 5th and 6th centuries, featuring early Christian cross motifs.
Statue of Saint Peter: A marble statue of Saint Peter is set in a niche within the cave’s interior.
Hidden Tunnels: Secret escape tunnels were built so the congregation could flee to the mountain during possible raids.
💍 A Living Wedding Ceremony in a Thousand‑Year‑Old Cave!
St. Pierre Church is not only a historic museum but also a living cultural heritage.
The original wedding ceremony we encountered during our visit—and that you can watch in the video—once again proves how this millennial cave church remains a sacred and vibrant place for communities today.
