The Birthplace of Christianity: St. Pierre (St. Peter) Church

Visiting this sacred site, which is the world's first cave church and one of the turning points of Christian faith, was a mesmerizing experience for me. Located on the slope of Stauris Mountain (Haç Dağı) in the Antakya district of Hatay, the St. Pierre Church, carved into the rock, is considered one of the most important centers of faith tourism in the world.

The Turning Point of Faith and History

St. Pierre (St. Peter), one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ, held the first religious gatherings in this natural cave in Antakya in the 30s AD. What makes this place unique in terms of world history is that it is the place where the community and believers were first referred to by the name "Christian".

This sacred temple, considered the first place of worship before the division of Christianity into sects, was declared an official "Pilgrimage Site" for Catholics by Pope Paul VI in 1963.

Architecture Extending from a Cave to a Magnificent Temple

Initially a natural limestone cave, the structure has been expanded over the centuries. The Gothic arches added to the facade by the Crusaders in the 12th and 13th centuries gave the church its current iconic appearance.

As you step inside, time seems to stand still. The notable details of the church include:

Antique Mosaics: The remains of 4th and 5th century floor mosaics in the ground area.

Sacred Altar: The historic altar made of stone, dedicated to St. Peter.

Hidden Tunnels: Escape tunnels carved into the cave by the first Christians to escape possible raids and persecution.
