As you escape the hustle and bustle of Istanbul and drift away to the soothing sound of the ferry, the Princes' Islands welcome you. Today, one of the most refined living areas of Istanbul, carrying the legacy of non-Muslim communities and mesmerizing with its historical texture, these islands are not just a holiday route, but a deep stage of history.
A Day in Büyükada: What to Do?
In Büyükada, the flagship of the islands, if you trust your fitness, climbing to the top should be at the top of your list. The Meryem Ana Kilisesi (Aya Yorgi), which has a very special place in the Orthodox world, will be the greatest reward at the end of that long walk or bike ride.
After descending, surrender to the rhythm of the island:
Time for a Break: Be sure to try that traditional dessert at the famous lokma shop right next to the Clock Tower.
A Cool Escape: If it's hot, taking a refreshing Iced Americano at Kahve Dünyası with a view of the Istanbul landscape is a classic island experience.
Island Spirit: At the end of the day, walking towards the ferry pier, buying an island ice cream, and strolling along the coastal strip is the perfect match for a local experience.
The Other Side of the Medal
Aside from all these beauties, bicycle sounds, and the sweetness of island ice cream, this place was once known as the "exile islands" in history. These lands, which are now a pleasant weekend getaway, were once a silent, abandoned prison where the fallen, emperors, and kings were exiled.
This contrast turns the islands into a story to think about, beyond just a place to visit.
