Three Historical Buildings in One Frame: Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Hagia Irene Tour Guide

Three Iconic Symbols Side by Side in Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula: Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Hagia Irene

🏛️ 1. Hagia Sophia

Built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in 537, Hagia Sophia held the title of the world’s largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years. Converted into a mosque after the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, it became a museum in 1934 and regained mosque status in 2020. With its massive dome and mosaics, it is one of the most important works in architectural history.

Highlights: Upper Gallery Visit, Byzantine mosaics, Seraphim angel depictions in the dome.

Entrance Fee (Foreign Tourists): 25 € (Valid for the upper gallery visit).

For Turkish Citizens: Entry to the worship area is free.

Visit Tip: Prefer times outside prayer hours and observe appropriate dress code (shoulders and knees covered, women should wear a headscarf).

🏰 2. Topkapi Palace

Located just behind Hagia Sophia on the Sarayburnu hill, Topkapi Palace served as the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire and the official residence of the sultans for approximately 400 years. With its vast courtyards, holy relics, treasury section and famous Harem, it forms a huge complex.

Highlights: Spoonmaker’s Diamond and Imperial Treasuries, Harem Section, Sacred Relics, Unique Terrace with Bosphorus View.

Entrance Fee:

Turkish Citizens: Museum Pass is valid (a separate ticket may be required for the Harem section).

Foreign Tourists: Combined Ticket: 55 € (approx. 2,750 TL) (Includes Palace + Harem + Hagia Irene).

Visit Tip: Since the area to explore inside is quite large, it is recommended to allocate at least 2-3 hours and go early in the morning to avoid queues.

⛪ 3. Hagia Irene Museum (Hagia Irene)

Located in the outer courtyard (First Courtyard) of Topkapi Palace, Hagia Irene is one of the rare Byzantine churches in Istanbul that was not converted into a mosque. Used as an armory (Harbiye Arsenal) during the Ottoman period, it has preserved its structure to this day. Renowned for its acoustics, the building is now used as a museum and a special concert venue.

Highlights: Atrium architecture, cross mosaic in the dome, traces of the historic armory.

Entrance Fee:

Turkish Citizens: 250 TL (Museum Pass not valid for Hagia Irene).

Foreign Tourists: Included in the Topkapi Palace Combined Ticket (55 €). Single ticket: 1,050 TL.

Visit Tip: Located just to the left of the courtyard before the main entrances of Topkapi Palace, you can stop by before starting your palace tour.

📍 How to Get to the Historic Peninsula & Practical Tips

Transport: By using the T1 Kabataş - Bağcılar Tram Line, you can get off at the Sultanahmet or Gülhane stops and walk to all these sites in minutes.

Best Visit Time: To avoid crowds and long ticket lines, it is ideal to be in the area around 08:30–09:00 in the morning.

Sea View: To capture the wonderful angle seen in the images, you can prefer ferries/boats that operate on the Eminönü-Üsküdar or Bosphorus tours.
